What is perfection?

I was chatting with my tutor the other day and, during the course of our conversation, we started discussing our attitude to work and to life generally. We both agreed that our minds should always be focused on improvement and that we should strive for perfection. We should make the most of our lives and constantly be looking for ways to progress as people.

Strangely (or not), the following morning I came across this verse in my reading:

"[The Lord said to Abraham] I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect"
Genesis 17:1

This made me ask the question: What is perfection? As a non-Christian, my tutor (though insightful) only had in mind our work, education, job/career etc. Of course, we should be working hard to improve these aspects of our life. But should these things be our priority? Is it these things God had in mind when speaking to Abraham?

Which is more important?

Being well educated or knowing God's Word?
Having a good career or knowing God's will for your life?
Looking pretty or having an inward beauty?
Being fit and healthy physically or being fit and healthy spiritually?
Having lots of friends or having God as a friend?

I find it so easy, particularly when life is good, to forget that there is more to life than the here and now. We weren't put on this earth to enjoy ourselves, or even to improve ourselves. Our purpose in life should be to strive for the perfection that brings honour and glory to God.

Do you agree? I would love to hear what you think. Does anyone have any further thoughts? Please feel free to disagree with me if you think differently than I do!

I totally agree with you and often I find myself worrying about the less important things. Even though the less important things are good in themselves, if they detract from what is better then we need refocus our minds. Thanks for reminding me of this. It doesn't matter if everyone my age is almost finished school work and I still have quite a bit left. What's important is whether I know the Bible and act it out. Who said anyway that you had to be finished school when you were 18?

Very thought provoking post! I like it! I am very religious and i know a lot of people dont understand that... One of my best friends doesnt believe in God but anyways... im rambling.. so..

To those questions you asked.. I think we need a balance of all in our lives for many reasons.

Having a good education IS important. That doesnt mean school.. you can educate yourself if so many ways.. Be knowledgeable in life and I feel we can understand God a lot more.

A good career to me is doing what makes you happy.. Doing the right thing is knowing Gods word and Gods will is for you to live happy.

Inward beauty is the most important... That is what would draw me to someone whether they are a friend or stranger.

Being fit and healthy physically, emotionally and spiritually are all necessary. Healthy mind is a healthy body.. so on and so forth

So in conclusion to this LONG comment.. Striving for perfection is necessary but being humble enough to know only God is perfect.
